Safety Harbor Kids (SHK) is a 501c3 nonprofit formed in 2007 for the purpose of enriching the lives of orphans, foster and homeless children through education in the areas of College, Career and the Arts.
Our goal is to build a College, Career and the Arts Education Center as a hub for our children's education programs to give disadvantaged children a place to go to help change their lives.
Founded by John Williams, a parentless child himself, SHK is approved by more than fifteen county and private group homes and shelters throughout Los Angeles to invite children to our Special Events. SHK has helped over two thousand orphans, foster and homeless children overcome their fears, express themselves through art and music and learn they can accomplish their goals and dreams. “I learned that the one thing that makes you happy is having a high self esteem” Vanessa age 15
Our Members, Donors and Sponsors fund our Special Events, held around the holidays, where we provide 350 children each year with College, Career, Music, Art and Mentor Programs.
At each Special Event we teach the children personal growth, motivation, career development, music and art. Our Special Events are geared to invite community members to meet the children so the kids can see someone really cares! The goalof our Special Events is to create Mentor Relationships between community members and the children and create a safety net to catch the children as they grow up and leave institutional life. “I learned that you can achieve anything in life” Marina age 17
Supported by music, television and film professionals including Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon, John Savage, Jim Belushi, Ed Asner, Jeremy Piven, Grammy winner Jackson Browne, Carlos Santana, Tom Petty and others, SHK has received an appreciation award from Vista del Mar for thousands of hours of community service as well as a grant from the City of Malibu.
SHK is run by member volunteers and the Board members take no salaries or donate them back. SHK runs on a 25% expense ratio and is supported by our community member donations, company sponsorships and grants. Donations are tax deductible.
